Graduation. The last day of your High School life, but the first day of the rest of your life. That was the mantra that circled Liu Anderson's mind as he sat, in the audience of his very own High School graduation, waiting for them to say his name so he could get up, and get his diploma.
And while he waited, he reflected some. In truth, his High School life hadn't been what most people would have expected, or what some people would even have qualified as a life at all. he never joy rode with anyone, never got drunk, never got high, the parties he did go to were all ones with his big brother, and all of his big brother's friends, and yes, Liu was, unfortunately, still a virgin.
And yes, of course there was his brother. Jeffery Anderson graduated a year ahead of Liu, and was already attending classes at the college that Liu would be attending in the fall. Jeff was 2 years older than Liu, and had always treated life as a party. However, a far better and wilder party than most people would think of.
Jeff wasn't just the class clown, he was the school clown. No one could top him at pranks, especially his legendary Senior prank, which ended with the Superintendent, the Principal, and the Vice Principal wearing Rock Horror Picture Show costumes, and covered in raw eggs, white paint, and two buckets full of black feathers. But then again, Jeff has had a hand in pretty much every single Senior Prank since he's been in High School.
Yep, one brother was a nutcase and a show off, and the other, well....everyone knew he was there, but no one ever really could pick him out in a crowd. A literal Wallflower. They knew the pattern, they knew he existed somewhere in the background, but he blended in so well, only someone like Jeff, who truly knew Liu for his entire existence, could pick him out in a crowd. Not that Liu minded. They had their dynamic. Jeff was Batman, and Liu was Robin. Or more accurately, Jeff was the criminal mastermind, and Liu was just the accomplice.
And now, at long last, after 4 years of grueling, agonizing school work, teachers preaching on and on about things that he really couldn't care less about, and of course, stupid meat headed bullies who loved to pick on him because of the fact that he never seemed to grow no matter how much he ate or exercised, he was here, looking up at the stage, just another indistinguishable cap and gown, waiting for his name to be called, so he could finally say the words that he had been wanting to say for years now, " Suck it bitches, I'm outta this hell hole!" A speech that was prompted by, and yet overshadowed by his brother, who once again cemented his legacy of weirdness into the minds of all of his classmates when he got onstage to get his diploma, started Irish dancing when he received it, and then promptly kissed the person in line behind him, which happened to be the Captain of the football team, and a frequent tormenter of bother Jeff and Liu. The guy almost killed Jeff, only to be stopped by the people on stage with them, while Jeff blew kisses to the cheering crowd. Their parents were mortified, but Liu had never been prouder.
" Liu Anderson." They announced at last. Liu finally got up, and made his way to the stage eagrly, to shake some hands, and get that damn piece of paper already!
" Alright Liu! Way to go, little buddy!" Liu grinned at the bleachers where he saw his brother, the only one standing aside from his parents, grandparents, and Aunt Rachel. Jeff kept loudly cheering, and doing a grand job of getting people to stare at him. Typical Jeffy.
Liu walked on stage, shook the hands of the people representing the school, and got his diploma.
" I'm free." The only thing that he could say, and mumbled so silently no one heard it. He returned to his seat, and just continued to wait while other names were called. Finally, it was done. All the diplomas were given, and everyone was listening as the last little speeches were winding down to a close.
" And now, I am very, very proud to introduce to you all, our graduating class!" the speaker announced, and with that, a flock of blue caps took flight, and a roar of cheering split the air.
" Suck it bitches, I'm outta this hell hole!" Liu screamed as loudly as he could. A few people around him laughed and cheered, or just shook their heads at him. Not really the huge tidal wave that Jeff made, but the small ripple was enough.
When the commotion died down, Liu fought his way through a current of people, over to his family. He was greeted by the tightest, warmest hug he'd ever received by his older brother.
" Congrats little brother! I knew you could do it! And you know, other sappy stereotypical words of praise." jeff kidded with a smirk on his face. Liu couldn't help but smile back.
" What more can I ask from the Trickster himself?" Liu asked jokingly, using Jeff's old nickname. Jeff once again smiled.
" But in all seriousness, great job little buddy. There was never any doubt that you would make it." Jeff said. Liu beamed. He knew Jeff wasn't a real mushy guy, but still hearing sincere words of praise from his big brother made Liu feel all warm inside.
His mother came up and hugged him, and kissed him on top of his head.
" Honey, we are all so proud of you!" She squealed.
" You did great, son!" His father congradulated, patting him hard on the back.
" Well what are we all standing around here for? Let's get some grub and really start celebrating!" Aunt Rachel said, to which everyone happily agreed.
Liu was just happy. Everything was just smooth sailing from here on out, especially after the rough waters they went through when they first moved into their new home all those years ago. It wasn't a very pleasant memory, and it particularly haunted Jeff. But now, they could forget about that, and focus on the future, that was indeed well at hand.
What if Jeff never went insane?
What if Ben never drowned?
What if Masky, Hoody, and Toby never became Proxies?
What if Nana never became part dog?
And what if, Liu never got captured by the Infera?
What if everything was normal, and nothing like that ever happened? That's what we're exploring here. The possibility that Jeff and Liu get to grow up, and have the lives they always imagined having as kids.
