Okay, it may be a bit bizarre, but hear me out; What if Mario games are based on a dimension, where Mario, Luigi, their friends and pals are forced into their roles by an Elder god, who took over their dimension decades ago, and basically turned the entire world into a massive 24/7 fairytale for their small child.
That is twisted and wonderful! Almost reminds me of Alice in Wonderland a tiny bit.
